Based on the hit book series by Rachel Mead and adapted by Julie Plec and Marguerite Macintyre, Vampire Academy tells a story that blends sci-fi, fantasy, and mythical elements with the modern world. As such, it presented an opportunity to modernize the sound of the genre. Using pandemic-era experiments with string quartets and hip-hop beats as starting points, we developed a new sound that blended fantasy score elements with modern production and songwriting.
It was a thrill to join such an amazing project and team of creatives. Crafting a score that successfully supported such an expansive story meant that they had to become conversant in the lore. As Jacob puts it, “Vampire Academy is an entire universe of characters and rules. It was quite an undertaking to craft all the themes and sonic palette all while learning the rules and backstories of everything.”
Julie & Marguerite had specific emotions in mind for the characters, the world but specifically the relationships. So Jacob and Roahn wrote full suites for several relationships in the show: Lissa & Rose’s friendship, Lissa & Christian, Mia & Meredith, Sonya & Mikhail and of course Dmitri & Rose. It took a few tries before they found the right sound for each, but once it clicked, Jacob and Roahn knew they had the sound of the show. Coupled with themes created for other story elements, these relationship themes formed the roadmap for the rest of the season.
