Another collaboration with Michael John Warren, Free Meek was a year-long process of music experimentation. The life of rapper Meek Mill is full of ups and downs, complete with a soundtrack of his own making. At first, the idea of crafting a score to sit alongside Mill’s music seemed quite simple.
However Jacob and Roahn quickly realized that the score would have to live in the in-between. Where Meek’s music was big, energetic and over-the-top, they needed to find the heart and the vulnerability of the man and the real conspiracy stacked against him.
“The piece titled, ‘Perseverance’, became our theme song and the rest of the score was borne of that. Growing from intimate human voices to full horn section, gospel choir and rhythm section, it hit the highs and lows we needed.” — Roahn & Jacob
Then as more of the court proceedings entered the cut Jacob and Roahn delved further and further into the investigatory music world — always fusing that with hip-hop and modern electronic music.
“Spiritually it was a dream to work on something culturally important and needed. The show was a painful reminder of what has been corrupted in our court systems and a hopeful demonstration of what just one person can do to fight against it.”
